Mazolli finds an orange poppy growing on the edge of the lawn. It’s the middle of winter, he tells Terrastina. How can a poppy be blooming in the middle of winter? Terrastina shrugs. Nature is wise and mysterious, she says. Well, sure, I know that, says Mazolli, but this is the middle of winter. It’s cold. Freezing, even. It’s—it’s—I don’t know, it’s weird. Crazy. Like I said, says Terrastina, wise and mysterious. Kind of like me. Mazolli tilts his head and considers Terrastina’s remark. I see it, he says. Yup. That explains a lot. It really does.
