Mazolli’s friend asks to borrow some money. If I had any to spare, says Mazolli, I’d give you some, but cash is tight right now. His friend looks like someone let the air out of him. I’m in trouble, he says. If I don’t get the rent together the landlord is going to kick me out. I don’t think he can really do that unless you haven’t paid in several months, says Mazolli. His friend looks at him. Oh, says Mazolli. He puts his hand in his pocket and pulls out some bills. Will seven dollars help? he asks.
