Episode 263: A Randomization Algorithm Encounters a Practical Constraint

Mazolli shuffles a deck of cards, then deals out a classic solitaire spread on the kitchen table. The twins watch silently as he begins moving cards around with practiced efficiency. Can we play? they ask. Sure, says Mazolli. Get yourselves a deck of cards and I’ll show you. The twins find two decks and return to the table. First thing, says Mazolli, is learning to shuffle. He demonstrates his technique. The twins watch carefully, then try to copy him but the cards are too big for their hands. Well, says Mazolli, we can always come back to shuffling later.
