The phone rings. Mazolli looks up from his quilt in progress. Terrastina looks up from the latest issue of Organic Gardening. Should we answer? asks Terrastina. I don’t want to talk to anyone, says Mazolli. Neither do I, says Terrastina, but it could be my mother. I better answer it. She rises and picks up the phone. Hello? She waits. Hello? Hello? She hangs up the phone. No one there, she says. It was just a dead line. No wrong number, no sound, no one at all. Just--dead. That’s weird, says Mazolli. Maybe they got tired of waiting.
