Episode 42: The Essence of Life

Terrastina takes the twins to the dock. They watch windsurfers plying the river. A barge hauling wood chips to a distant paper mill glides slowly by, scattering the red, yellow, and blue sails to the banks of the river like petals. A woman paddling a kayak waves at the twins. The twins wave back. In the distance tiny cars crawl across the silver toll bridge built over a narrowing in the river. Terrastina looks at the green water sloshing below her. Hey, she says, there's a fish. The twins follow her gaze, straining to catch a flash of movement.
