Mazolli cracks the knuckles of his left hand one at a time. The sound fills the house. The twins look at him, then look at their own hands. Doesn’t that hurt? they ask. Nope, says Mazolli. But it’s a bad habit. You shouldn’t do it. I shouldn’t do it either. The twins nod. Mazolli nods right back at them. He finishes cracking his left hand and moves onto his right, methodically cracking each one in turn. The twins look deeply puzzled. But you just said, they say. Mazolli becomes very thoughtful.
