The twins sit on the ground in the backyard and toss handfuls of sand at each other, giggling all the while. Mazolli tells them to stop. Do we have to? they ask. I don’t want you getting sand in your eyes, says Mazolli. We’re trying to see how fast airplanes go, they tell him. Mazolli is perplexed. How fast airplanes go? he asks. Yeah, they say, our teacher told us airplanes travel at the speed of sand. Sound, says Mazolli. Airplanes travel at the speed of sound. Not sand. They look at him. That’s not what our teacher said.
