Episode 57: Other Ways of Knowing

At the grocery story Mazolli picks a watermelon and puts it in the shopping cart. Is it ripe? asks Terrastina. Mazolli thumps it with his finger. Sounds ripe, he says. But I can never tell for sure until I slice it. Sometimes it’s overripe. Terrastina takes a chain out of her purse and suspends it from her index finger above the watermelon. A rose quartz crystal swings from the end. My mother taught me this trick, says Terrastina. You can tell by the direction of the swing if the watermelon is ripe or not. Mazolli watches the stone, mesmerized.
